Run Goro, Run!

I borrowed Goro (one of my Martians) for the run cycle test. It's based on the Preston Blair example. I'm not sure who (or what) he's running from, but I know it was provoked.

Earthling Scorpions

Supporting bad behavior (or ideas) with inflated language annoys me. It was one of the reasons I left teaching.

Stupid Noises

Click the cartoon for a bigger version. :)

I named him Goro after a character from the opera Madama Butterfly. The latter Goro was a scheming troublemaker, and not the most sucessful trickster. In the show he actually gets his butt kicked by Madama Butterfly when she catches him spreading vicious rumors.
I toyed with naming him Thycho (after an astronomer), but "Goro" seemed to fit him the best.

Evil Pet Tricks

Click cartoon for larger version .

That reminds me...
Years ago I worked at a pet store where a Severe Macaw watched me sweep around his perch with great interest. As soon as I put the broom down he'd swipe his beak across his food dish to send a new shower of food over the floor. He thought it was a game!

Talk-o-doodle-doo

Working overtime this week and last week, which means less time for the blog for now. Ah well, it beats being unemployed.

Who are the Triton Brothers?

click the cartoon for a bigger version

Triton is Neptune's largest moon and really has a backward orbit compared to Neptune's orbit.
p.s.
Update:
Shortly after I posted this, a flap came up in England when, as a movie promotion, a giant drawing of Homer Simpson appeared next to the ancient Cerne Abbas Giant.* Local pagans were outraged.
Another case of crassness perceived as blasphemy.

*Unlike similar hillside carvings, the Giant is believed to be only about 400 years old. One theory is that it's a goof on Oliver Cromwell (garbed up as Hercules). If that's true, than both the Giant and Homer are satirical cartoons!

Bone vs. Bonehead

click cartoon for larger view

I like the expressions on Thycho (the runty guy). Vespa (the other one) looks stiff. A cartooning book I read said "Don't kid yourself: If it's bad draw it over!" I spend half of my cartooning time redrawing what doesn't work. I hope it will get easier with practice.

I showed this to two people before posting it. One thought it was funny, the other said they didn't get it.

The Martians VII

It's tricky for me to make this stuff look balanced and eye-friendly using just black and white. It's gonna take practice to get it right.
I considered making the sky black in the final panel (it would look better that way) but didn't want to rip off "Krazy Kat".

The Martians VI

Click cartoon for larger image.

For this one the catch was to use strict black and white, with no gray scale.

Looks a bit derivative of Bill Watterson's Calvin & Hobbes, but I wasn't trying to rip him off.

The Martians V

I find it trickier to work in gray scale than in color- I often use gaudy colors as a crutch to make a mediocre drawing more eye friendly. So I did this as a challenge. When I was done I discovered this probably should have been done in greens instead of gray. Oh well. Check back for a photoshopped version.
