Thanks, stray g. The peacock "eyes" on the boat was a nod to the Argonauts from Greek mythology. It was only after I was almost done with the thing that I realized the "guy-tied-to-the-mast" episode was from the The Odyssey, not the Argonauts. D'oh!
Linda, I figured that most "real" journeys aren't the kind taken by zealous explorers looking for excitement (like the ship). Either we're shanghaied into 'em or, as you said, hanging on for dear life.
