I envisioned a anthropomorphic claw hammer. Friendly and well-meaning, he's not the sharpest tool in the shed. He misidentifies anyone (and anything) he encounters as "NAIL!!" and tries to pound it.
When a real nail crosses his path, he trips over it.

Cute picture. You could do a lot with this character- like the way you've thought it out. But couldn't help thinking of the song, "If I had a hammer."
I'll admit the song drifted in my head too while I was drawing him!
Someone could have a lot of fun with cartoony tools-
The Vice would have bad habits, The Drill would be boring, The Screwdriver would be a con artist, etc... but it'd be a hard idea to sell.
