Hi Stray, The Salton Sea* has a strange history. About a century ago it was a dried up desert lake. An irrigation dike broke up north and flooded the area (it's below sea level). In the 1950s it was something of a resort, but that's been mostly abandoned. It's still a big hit with birds, but increasing salinity and lack of source water may put an end to that. Boo.
*just noticed the guy who wrote the article has the same initials and last name as me. A distant relative? Maybe I'll drop him a line.
I'd love to see the whole video, it looks like a fascinating story.
For a couple of years I've been meaning to take a side-trip out there during one of my Disneyland trips, specifically to see the North Shore Yacht Club building and the (also) abandoned 50's motel ruins...
