Riff Raff Halloween Candy.

The day after Halloween was great when I was a kid. My trick or treat bag was loaded with goods. There was always one or two houses that gave full sized candy bars. Those floated like treasures in a pile of Milky Ways, Snickers, Hershey Bars, Reese Peanut Butter cups, Starbursts, Skittles, Butterfingers, and Nestle Crunches and Peppermint Patties.
The chocolates would be gone within a week. The real chocolates, not those quasi-chocolates like Tootsie Rolls or Milk Duds. Next to go was the it's not my favorite but it's still free candy treats. Twizlers, Red Hots, Good 'n' Plentys, Dots, Tootsie Pops and the like.
By mid November, only the Riff Raff candy remained:
Mini TootsieRolls, candy corn, Bottle Caps, SweetTarts, Lemon Heads, Smarties ( it was fun to pretend they were pills), Circus Peanuts, stale hard candy, and the dreaded Neapolitan Coconut Sundae Squares. The latter might last through Easter.

I was tempted by the price tag on the cheap candy, but ultimately had to get good stuff instead. Saw a weird recipe for Halloween snack "fingers": circus peanut with jelly bean for fingernail

  2. Of course I didn't trick or treat in same decade, but agree with assesment, except fortunately never ran into the Neapolitan horror.

I think Jolly Ranchers belong in the tiny tootsie roll category. When I used to eat Dinah's Halloween stash, I could see no purpose at all for Jolly Ranchers.

  3. Stay g,
Circus peanuts are distubing enough without adding a severed finger angle.
I'm gonna have bad dreams! ;)

    Sally,
I agree Jolly Ranchers are overrated. Weird name too. Why is the rancher so jolly? What exactly is he farming?

  4. Why, why, why would anyone consider giving out riff raff candy to begin with when REAL CHOCOLATE exists in the world?

I can still remember the smell of my room when I would have the bag of Halloween candy stashed by the bed. And the smell of those plastic masks. Did your parents insist on going with you? I hated that!

  5. Hah---So true!

I remember having the same situation with my unwanted candy; the odd stuff that you would never end up eating unless desperate for sugar.

I remember that Neopolitan thing; I believe it was/is made by Brachs right?

    Take care!

  6. Hi Linda,
I remember that chocolaty trick or treat bag smell. And the mask smell too. Do they make box costumes anymore? Most drug store costumes I've seen lately seem more high end.
My folks followed me around when I trick or treated until I was maybe nine or ten, but I figured they were keeping an eye on my little brother.
    You're correct, Walterworld.
Bracht is the evil mastermind behind those Neapolitan Sundae squares of horror. Maybe they taste better than I remember them, since they're still sold to this day. Someone's buying them.

I dislike typing the quasi-legible words too, but without them it's Spam City, Sorry!
