I Love the Crocodile

I found my favorite scene from Peter Pan on You Tube. I love the Crocodile. He's a dangerous beast, yet cute and puppylike. He wags his tail and begs. I like the part when he surfaces, sees Captain Hook on his face, and breaks into an evil grin.
Wolfgang Reitherman animated the Croc. He did wonderful action sequences. Each time you think it couldn't possibly get more silly (or precarious) it does!

Something about this kind of animation bugs me. Is it the Disney look? But I LOVE the water! (I'm trying to do water now, and can't figure it out for the life of me.)

Hi Linda,
That's interesting that it bugs you. Does Disney animation do that to you in general? Or is it just the crazy slapstick scenes?
The water is beautiful. I believe they had separate animators who did "realistic" stuff like water, fire, leaves blowing etc..

You know, I don't think it's the animation that bugs me. It's the stylized look of the characters. So many cartoons have exactly the same "look." Just imagine how much more interesting it would be if you or Sally or Jim Woodring or Lynda Barry or Serge Bloch came up with the characters. Also, the sound in these Disney animations drives me up the wall. But maybe it's because I don't know how to turn down my headphones!!

Thanks Linda,
That might be a fun project if we picked a scene from a Disney movie and drew it in our own styles (and adding our own whimsical elements).

Hi Sally,
I like his mousetrap jaws too.

Come to think of it, the big-animal-who-acts-like-a-puppy gag has shown up in some contemporary films (George of the Jungle, Night at the Museum). I wonder if Peter Pan was the first time it was used?
